Game Virtu
An extensive area control strategy set in Renaissance Italy.
Lead Florence, Naples, or Rome; manage art, economy, and military; and make your city the hegemon of 16th-century Italy.
Asymmetric gameplay, a pool of variable actions, and many paths to victory.
Virtu is a complex strategic area control game themed around Renaissance Italy. The turn of the 15th and 16th centuries: Columbus discovers America, Vasco da Gama reaches India, Copernicus writes On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres, and Michelangelo prepares to paint the Sistine Chapel frescoes. Amid discoveries and emerging humanism, Italy plays a special role. On the Apennine Peninsula, the influence of great powers wanes, and city-states like Florence, Venice, Milan, Rome, and Naples vie for dominance. As their leaders, you face the challenge of making them local powers. Manage your city’s economy, culture, and military. Present yourselves as Renaissance men, be patrons of the arts, and pursue your rights diplomatically. But don’t hesitate to use force when necessary, as sometimes only it brings desired results. Virtu is asymmetric; each of the five factions has strengths and weaknesses. Many paths lead to victory, and randomness is minimal.
Family Prestige
At the start, you lead one of five powerful dynasties: the Aragons of Naples, the Sforzas of Milan, the Medici of Florence, the Doges of Venice, or the Borgias of Rome. Your main goal is to accumulate Prestige Points earned from controlled Cities, Patronage track progress, Religious Influence level, Military Trophies, political Alliances with great powers (Kingdom of France, Ottoman Empire, Holy Roman Empire), and effects of certain cards and tiles.
Chambers and Antechambers
The game is divided into Years (rounds) with two phases. In Spring, you perform actions, resolve Sieges, and determine Turn Order. In Winter, you pay wages, recruit Soldiers, and form Alliances. Your command centers are Palaces—action boards featuring Chambers with printed actions: Management, Patronage, Trade, Takeover, Maneuver, and Intrigue. On the board edges are Antechambers where you place acquired Courtier cards. Acquired tiles go above your boards into the Influence Zone.
Empire Management
At Spring phase start, move the Action marker up to 2 spaces from one Chamber to another, performing the assigned action. Each action requires resources like Florins, Crown, Cross, or Ship, obtained from tiles or cards in Chambers (Action and Upgrade cards). If resources run out, use those on Courtier cards, flipping them to exhausted side. Courtiers reactivate when you visit their Antechamber as the Action marker passes by.
