Gel batteries have become an alternative to classic lead-acid batteries. Unlike the latter, gel models are maintenance-free, meaning they do not require electrolyte refilling. Their advantages include a sealed casing and electrolyte in gel form, ensuring no leakage, allowing the battery to be stored in any position and making it more shock-resistant.
Gel battery durability
One of the greatest advantages of gel batteries is their lifespan. Among available types, this kind has the longest, potentially lasting several years if used properly. Additionally, gel batteries are more resistant to variable and extreme weather conditions.

Gel batteries can be stored without charging for many months. Their capacity decreases to:
– 91% after 3 months
– 82% after 6 months
– 64% after 9 months
Choosing a gel battery
Proper dimensions are not everything. When selecting a battery, pay attention to its capacity — it should not be more than 110% or less than 90% of the recommended capacity for the device you plan to power. Voltage value must also be very close to the recommended (+/- 0.2 V).
Applications of gel batteries
Gel batteries are used in motorcycles, golf carts, and lawnmowers. They are also used in backup power supplies, photovoltaic installations, alarm systems, and electric toys. Moreover, they can be found in vehicles with many electrical devices, e.g., campers, where they power electronic equipment rather than starting the engine.
Choose a charger for the gel battery
To function properly and avoid battery damage, the charger must have appropriately matched current and voltage. These values vary during charging stages, so it is advisable to choose an automatic charger that adjusts current and voltage and switches off when the battery is fully charged.
