Desalination plants will supply water. Laboratories will develop technologies necessary for building networks of underwater cities.
From the start, players direct the development of their own underwater states. They gather resources to build cities, transport networks, and various buildings essential for sustaining life beneath the sea surface.
Each action in the game involves playing a card and choosing the corresponding action. If the card color matches the action color, the player gains benefits from the card. Sometimes the action is so important that the player will perform it without having a matching card. Other times, the card’s benefit is so great that the player chooses an action that may not be spectacular but has the right color. Making these choices is key to building an underwater environment conducive to humanity’s development.
Underwater Cities is the latest game by Vladimir Suchy, creator of hits like Pulsar 2849, Last Will, and Shipyard. It became one of the hits at Essen 2018, with publishing rights acquired by Rio Grande Games (publisher of hits like Race for the Galaxy and Dominion!). Underwater Cities is a eurogame designed for fans of heavier titles like Teotihuacan or Mage Knight. Multiple paths to victory, tough choices, and a unique mechanic earned it nominations for the Golden Geek awards in Game of the Year and Best Strategy Board Game categories.
