The game is played between two opponents who must plan their moves strategically and anticipate the opponent’s moves to avoid defeat before the game ends. SKATO is also excellent brain training and offers many enjoyable mental sparring matches for players of all ages and experience levels. The game involves placing your pawns on the board so that adjacent pawns of the same color form the largest possible area. Each player has one color. One player starts by placing a pawn anywhere on the board, then the other places a pawn adjacent by one side to the opponent’s pawn. Players alternate placing pawns until the board is full, aiming to build the largest connected area of their color. Pawns must touch at least one side of an existing pawn; corner-only contact is invalid. Multiple disconnected areas are allowed, but only areas of at least 5 pawns count for scoring. The game ends when all spaces are filled and pawns placed.
Note: forming a line of 5 pawns horizontally or vertically during the game ends it immediately with that player’s victory.
