Castrum Romanum, military engineering perfection
The Roman military camp, or castrum, was a well-thought-out complex with a strictly defined layout combining defensive, logistical, and administrative functions. Camps usually had a rectangular plan. Two main roads intersected perpendicularly, dividing the area into quarters. At the center was the praetorium, the commander’s tent, surrounded by staff buildings and warehouses. Watchtowers were placed at corners, and along the walls were signposts, tents, ramparts, and defensive ditches.
Each legionary had an assigned place in the tent, and entire units were arranged according to hierarchy. At the empire’s peak, permanent castra often evolved into permanent settlements, forming the seeds of future cities.
Tents, legionary houses
Contubernium was the smallest organized unit in the Roman army, consisting of eight legionaries. Each contubernium had its own tent about 3 meters wide and 1.5 meters high. Ten such groups formed a century.
In the camp, century tents were set tightly side by side in a row. At the end was the centurion’s tent, similar in size to the others.
