Germanic warriors were known for brutal strength, warlike ferocity, and hatred of Roman rule. From the 1st century BC to the fall of Western Rome in the 5th century AD, Germanic tribes repeatedly attacked empire borders.
Their war style was based on mass attacks, hand-to-hand combat, and relentlessness. Armed with long spears, axes, swords, and large wooden shields often decorated with symbolic patterns.
For a long time, Germans lived divided into many tribes. When united, they formed a truly fearsome army, exemplified by the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, where Roman legions were ambushed and destroyed.
In the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, Romans launched campaigns against Germans with little success. Using intrigue and bribery, they imposed dominance over some border tribes.
From the 3rd century, Rome weakened under German pressure. The Migration Period, intensified by Hun invasions, led to border breaches and Germanic kingdoms forming on empire lands, shaping future European states.
