Celtic warriors were among the fiercest and most unpredictable enemies of the Roman Empire. Between the 5th century BC and 1st century AD, Celts ruled large parts of Europe.
For a Celtic warrior, courage and military skills defined his status among tribesmen. Their fierce fighting inspired fear even among well-armed Romans. Their military culture was based on aggressive attacks, bravery, and honor. They often fought naked, covered in blue dye (woad) to intimidate enemies.
Their main weapons were spears, shields, and swords, and elite warriors wore chainmail and bronze or iron helmets later adopted by the Roman army. Celtic shields were often painted and decorated with magical symbols, serving as both defense and tribal identity and spiritual protection.
Despite their bravery and brutality, Celts were conquered by Rome’s growing power. They resisted for a long time, with frequent uprisings on their lands.
