Monsters in New York Game
Monsters in New York is a board game by Richard Garfield, creator of the cult collectible series Android: Netrunner and Magic: The Gathering. It is the rightful successor to his earlier game Monsters in Tokyo. Unlike its predecessor, it is larger and operates on somewhat different rules. Alongside hill-fighting mechanics where the player in the city gains the most benefits but also suffers the most losses, there is a board movement element. New York consists of five boroughs. The greatest benefits come from Manhattan, divided into three levels, but other boroughs like Brooklyn or the Bronx also offer rewards by destroying skyscrapers, hospitals, and factories. Players must beware of retaliation from the US army! Monsters in New York features simple rules and many gameplay possibilities. Each player controls a different monster, including Drakonis, Kong, or Captain Fish. Fighting other monsters requires strategic dice symbol allocation and skillful use of special action cards. The winner is the monster who first reaches 20 HP or remains alone on the battlefield!
Box News!
Good morning, dear viewers! I’m Morgan McDouble, bringing you the morning Box News for New York. This morning, a spooky monster was spotted in Manhattan! Probably a prehistoric T. Rex, but much bigger! Also, a monster was seen in the Bronx—a twenty-meter praying mantis with a chainsaw strolling the streets, chopping up another factory. Could it be angry about rainforest deforestation? Oh, something’s happening in Brooklyn and Queens too, and Staten Island. Basically, all of New York is on fire. Have a nice day and enjoy your coffee!
Dice in motion!
Each turn, players roll six black dice (special cards can add two green dice). Dice have six effects: each Energy symbol grants one energy cube, each Attack symbol deals one damage to enemies, each Heal restores one life point. Destruction symbols help demolish buildings, Fame symbols earn victory points, and Ouch symbols trigger US army retaliation!
Monster in Manhattan
The New York board is divided into five boroughs, with Manhattan being the most important. On their turn, a player must enter Manhattan unless occupied by another monster. Being in Manhattan, the player deals damage to all monsters outside Manhattan. This rule works both ways. Starting a turn in Manhattan grants extra HP, energy dice, and advancement to higher Manhattan levels for greater benefits.
It will hurt!
Players decide whether to leave Manhattan each time they take damage. Moving to other boroughs allows destroying buildings using Destruction symbols. Each destroyed building grants HP, victory points, or energy dice. Beware! Destroyed buildings become US army units: infantry, jets, or tanks! The army retaliates whenever an Ouch symbol is rolled. Special cards bought with energy dice help defeat the army.
