Messina 1347 is a medium-weight eurogame transporting you to the time of the plague epidemic when aristocratic families in Italian Messina fought for survival while trying to maintain influence. Created by Vladimír Suchý (Underwater Cities, Prague Caput Regni), it innovatively combines various mechanics like worker placement, progress tracks, and board moderation by adding hex tiles. Like in Prague Caput Regni, Suchý skillfully balances eurogame rules with thematic immersion. As aristocratic families, you help locals by settling them in rural estates or quarantine huts. Numerous actions allow progress on three Chronicle tracks and scoring points. The winner is the one who contributes most to plague-stricken Messina. Besides standard play, the game offers solo and asymmetric variants.
Black Death
At first, nothing foretold the end of the world. A typical day. Calm waves lap the gentle shores of Italian Messina. Ships dock, bringing goods worldwide. One arrives from Crimea, carrying rats with fleas. Soon, they spread a mysterious disease killing one-third of Europe—known as the Black Death.
Gameplay
Messina 1347 spans 6 rounds. Initially, each player has 3 Governors per round, playing 3 turns each. Later, you can gain more Governors and turns. A round ends when all Governors are used. Each turn has 4 steps: place a Governor on a city tile, rescue a Resident (if possible), fight plague, and perform the tile’s action or repopulate a District.
Action Description
In round 1, you send Governors to Messina, then move them across city hexes. You cannot place a Governor where another is present. If a hex has a Resident token, you can rescue them by placing them in your estate or quarantine hut if plague cubes are present. Use Fire tokens to fight plague, advancing on the Chronicle of Merits track. Unremoved plague cubes cause negative points at game end.
Scoring
Residents are Craftsmen, Nuns, and Aristocrats. Rescued residents go to your player board estates, where you activate them for benefits. Extra actions depend on progress on three Chronicle tracks: Merits, Church, and City. Endgame points come from these tracks, repopulated city districts, upgraded Quarantine Hut and Workshop buildings, and acquired resources.
