Legend of speed and desperation
The Messerschmitt Me 163B was an attempt to create a wonder weapon – Germany’s answer to Allied bombing raids. As a rocket interceptor, it reached speeds exceeding 1000 km/h, surpassing most Allied aircraft capabilities.
Designed by Alexander Lippisch and tested by legendary pilot Heini Dittmar, the Komet was a technological sensation, the first aircraft to break the 1000 km/h barrier. Its immense speed came at extreme risk.
Flight time was only about 12 minutes, with a range of 27 to 100 km, greatly limiting operational capabilities. After fuel depletion, the plane became a glider, forcing pilots to perform difficult and risky unpowered landings – often on one skid. These planes could only rejoin combat after being towed back to the airfield and prepared for takeoff.
Due to these unusual difficulties, only the best and bravest pilots could fly, fight, and especially land it safely. Among these few pilots was a woman, whose figurine is included in the set.
Despite limited range and operational challenges, the Me 163 is forever remembered as the fastest WWII fighter and a symbol of the desperate technological race.
