F-16 in the Norwegian Air Force
Norway was one of the pioneers in the European program for purchasing and co-producing F-16 aircraft. On July 21, 1975, together with Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark, it signed an agreement to acquire modern multirole fighters. The choice fell on the American F-16 Fighting Falcon, which revolutionized modern aviation with its agility, advanced avionics, and relatively low operating costs.
Over four decades of service!
Norwegian F-16s stood out with their light gray paint scheme, the Norwegian flag on the tail, and a unique numbering system linked to American numbers. Short and snowy Norwegian runways, often in scattered locations, required their F-16s to be equipped with drag chutes to cope with situations where regular wheel brakes could not be used.
Over more than 40 years of service, Norwegian F-16s participated in many key international operations under NATO auspices, including Kosovo, Afghanistan, Libya, and Baltic airspace patrols as part of NATO Baltic Air Policing.
After 42 years of service, the last operational flight of a Norwegian F-16 took place on January 6, 2022. Although the aircraft were retired from active service, many remain technically operational and found second lives — some were transferred to Romania, others sold to training companies.
