Book “I’ll Tell You, Mom, What Spiders Do”
Who among us likes spiders? Who at least is not afraid of them? Children aged 2-6, for whom this book is intended, usually enjoy observing animals, even tiny ones. However, spiders often evoke fear or aggression in both children and adults.
The book tells the story of Kleofas the spider, who says goodbye to his parents and siblings to venture into the world. The spider story helps all of us, regardless of age, to become familiar with these creatures—if they have names and loved ones, it’s harder to fear or dislike them. Reading and viewing this book together, solving rhymed riddles, encourages the child to tell what happened in the picture and what and why the animals do. Such storytelling stimulates imagination, develops creative problem-solving skills, and promotes speech development. Besides Kleofas’s story, there are other threads like the adventures of a bumblebee or dung beetle, and ants, heroes of the first book in this series.
Highly recommended especially if a child is terrified of spiders or tends to stomp on everything small and moving. Thanks to this book, instead of running away or attacking, the child may wonder the creature’s name and how many siblings it has.
