The Warsaw Uprising broke out on August 1, 1944, at 5:00 PM (W-hour) and lasted until October 3. It was an armed uprising of the Polish resistance, mainly the Home Army, against the German occupying forces in Warsaw. The goal was to liberate the capital before the arrival of the Red Army to ensure Poland’s sovereignty after the war. Despite initial successes, the insurgents could not hold their positions against superior German forces and lack of sufficient external aid. After 63 days of intense and exhausting fighting, the uprising was suppressed. About 16,000 insurgents and 150,000-200,000 civilians died, and the city was almost completely destroyed. To this day, the Warsaw Uprising symbolizes immense courage and sacrifice for higher values.
