The Grille Ausf. M self-propelled gun was one of the most distinctive German designs of WWII. Based on the proven chassis of the Czech Panzer 38(t) tank, it was thoroughly redesigned. The engine was moved to the central part of the hull, and the main armament, a powerful 150 mm sIG 33 howitzer, was placed in the rear armored superstructure.
Thanks to these changes, the Grille Ausf. M gained better stability, the ability to fire at a greater angle, and more effective support for German infantry on the front. About 280 combat units were produced, serving on both Eastern and Western fronts within armored and panzergrenadier divisions.
